If you ever wondered how the GPS tracking system works, you’re not alone. Many people know it has something to do with satellite tracking systems, but they don’t understand exactly how or why. Indeed GPS tracking systems relies on satellites. However, a GPS unit is purely a receiving unit – it doesn’t “tell” anyone where you are. By measuring the elapsed time it takes for the data stream from several satellites to reach the device, it can pinpoint your position anywhere on the globe with amazing accuracy. So, all it does is: listen to the GPS satellites, make some calculations, and determine your global positioning coordinates – nothing less, nothing more.

Of course, that just the basic "GPS tracking system" unit. When you get a navigation system, you have that unit tied to a microcomputer with maps, allowing it to plot the best route to any destination. And if you tie that up to a cell phone, then you can track its position remotely. But as you’re now aware, that’s just an “extra” feature added to a basic GPS receiver.
